The unit is a great unit to work on, management is great. Duke has lost a lot of great nurses due to pay/travel. It is frustrating to work at a well known hospital with majority being travelers that make triple what the faithful nurses make that have stayed and are trained on equipment the travelers cannot care for.

I’m a traveler nurse. I find the pay is less than some other hospitals around the area. However, the resources and ratios make a difference. Would recommend for first time travelers, and other nurse looking for permanent positions. Good ratios.

Started this job at 24.65/hr base pay. There were two market increases during my employment there so I ended somewhere around $30/hr, plus I had $5/hr night shift diff and around $3/hr additional on weekends. The reason the stars are low is as follows. I started mid-pandemic. Our normal was being tripled with vented patients on multiple ICU drips. It was rough but we did it because the patients needed care and there weren’t enough nurses. Fast forward to the end of the Delta surge and a decrease in census. We were finally adequately staffed due to to combination of low census and several travelers joining us… the hospital started sending staff nurses home to use out PTO and working the remaining nurses tripled anyway, because they weren’t making enough money when we worked with appropriate ratios. They literally told us it was due to “productivity numbers.” I left to travel
