Duke has been a great place to start as a new grad. I have learned a ton. They do a good job of keeping staffing ratios safe. We have self scheduling. It is easy to transfer units within Duke facilities. You do have to pay for parking which is a pain.

CT surgery stepdown has 3-4 patient ratio and never more than that. Beds are closed before nurses have extra patients. Inconsistent NA coverage, charge nurses never have patients. Resources include phlebotomy, IV team for PIV insertion, Vascular access team for PICC insertion/troubleshooting, covering respiratory therapists, clinical transport, RRT consults and behavioral consulting nurses.
Intermittent incentives for picking up overtime shifts.

Management is great on my unit.
However they make employees pay for parking.
Overall good experience, but much can be improved with overall employee satisfaction and education for furthering nursing career.

The staffing ratios are good. Minimal shifts where ratios are overlooked. Parking has to be paid for which can be up to 50 dollars a month. Multiple resources available such as phlebotomy, IV team, Rapid Response Team, Behavioral Response Team. Work closely with Advanced Practice Providers. Retention has been an issue, but they are trying to work to incentivize retention. My biggest deterrent: As many hospitals do, some decisions seem purely business based and not driven by RN satisfaction and/or patient safety.

They offer a lot of resources to nurses but your experience is very dependent on the unit you’re on. Its a great hospital to gain experience at but can be difficult at times. Burn out seems to be a big issue and turnover is very high.
